Manchester United are ready to shift their focus from Declan Rice of Westham to Leeds United player Kalvin Phillips as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer intensifies his search for a new defensive midfielder. Manchester United are interested in signing Kalvin Phillips from their bitter rivals.
United have turned their attention to the England sensation after dropping their interest in West Ham’s Declan Rice. United manager Ole Gunner Solskjaer has stated that acquiring a defensive midfielder is his first goal in the upcoming transfer window.
Rice has been on United’s radar for a year, but executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward is concerned about the Hammers’ £90 million appraisals. Old Trafford executives feel Rice, 22, is not worth what the Hammers are asking for and are willing to explore elsewhere to fill the role.
And, with Liverpool dominating the battle to sign Borussia Dortmund’s Jude Bellingham, Phillips is the favoured option. The news that United want to recruit Phillips will surprise Leeds supporters, who hate the Old Trafford club and consider them to be their worst foes.
United have a history of plundering Leeds for their top stars, having lured the likes of Eric Cantona, Alan Smith and Rio Ferdinand across the Pennines in the past.
Phillips was born in Leeds and has become an iconic character at the club after assisting with the team’s promotion back to the Premier League in 2020. The 25-year-old has gone on to become an important member of England’s squad, helping Gareth Southgate’s team reach the Euro 202 final this summer.
Phillips would be hesitant to leave his local club, but he is concerned that Leeds manager Marcelo Bielsa will leave Elland Road at the conclusion of the season and understands that United will be a title contender in the future years.
Meanwhile, United ace Marcus Rashford is hoping to return to training next week after seeing a specialist about his troublesome shoulder. Rashford went under the knife following the Euros and has been sidelined since July, but is hoping to rejoin his teammates next week.
