“We’re annoyed” – Villarreal defender Pau Torres expresses frustration over Manchester United defeat

Pau Torres has stated that Villarreal believe they should have taken at least a point against Manchester United.

Instead, they were dealt a late sorrow on Wednesday evening as Manchester United turned the game around to get off to a winning start in the Champions League.

In a replay of last season’s Europa League final, the Spanish team was far superior in the first half and should have been far up by the time the half-time whistle sounded.

They did grab the lead after the break when Paco Alcacer turned in the electric Arnaut Danjuma cross, but the goal appeared to galvanize United.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side equalized seven minutes later when Alex Telles blasted home a well-worked corner from the outside of the box, and they subsequently seized the lead.

In the waning seconds of the game, Jesse Lingard performed superbly to hold off a defender and flip the ball into the path of Cristiano Ronaldo, who thumped home.

While the Manchester United fans were driven into a frenzy, Villarreal were left disheartened, and Torres communicated the team’s displeasure.

“We’re annoyed. The game was basically over, we just needed to see it out and we didn’t,” Torres said. “We need to learn from this. We were impeccable before that, taking the lead, creating chances, being better than Man Utd at Old Trafford.

“We held out until the final minute, we needed to know how to deal with this last-minute better.

“Ronaldo is the kind of player who gets one chance and he takes it. That is what happened. We’ve shown we can be better than Atalanta and United over the two games.

“In the first-half we created a lot of chances and weren’t good when it came to decision making. We need to improve and learn from that.”
